Quality control is a must for any industry, and woven manufacturers are no exception. In order to ensure the quality of their products, pp woven bag manufacturers need to measure the weight and thickness of their fabric on a regular basis. One of the most common methods used to measure this is known as ‘GSM’ (grams per square meter).
Normally, we measure the thickness of PP woven fabric in GSM. In addition, it also refers to “Denier”, which is also a measurement indicator, so how do we convert these two?
Firstlyl, let’s see what’s GSM and Denier mean.
1. What is GSM of pp woven material?
The term GSM stands for grams per square meter. It is a unit of measurement used to determine the thickness .
Denier means fiber grams per 9000m, it is a unit of measurement that is used to determine the fiber thickness of individual threads or filaments used in the creation of textiles and fabrics. Fabrics with a high denier count tend to be thick, sturdy, and durable. Fabrics with a low denier count tend to be sheer, soft, and silky.
Then, let’s do the calculation upon an actual case,
We take a roll of polypropylene tape (yarn) from the extruding production line, width 2.54mm, length 100m, and weight 8grams.
Denier means yarn grams per 9000m,
So, Denier=8/100*9000=720D
Note:- Tape(Yarn) width is not included in calculating Denier. As again it means yarn grams per 9000m, whatever is the width of yarn.
When weaving this yarn into 1m*1m square fabric, let’s calculate what’s the weight will be per square meter (gsm).
Method 1.
GSM=D/9000m*1000mm/2.54mm*2
1.D/9000m=grams per meter long
2.1000mm/2.54mm=number of yarn per meter (include warp and weft then *2)
3. Each yarn from 1m*1m is 1m long, so the number of the yarn is also the total length of the yarn.
4. Then the formula makes the 1m*1m square fabric equal as a long yarn.
It comes to a simplified formula,
GSM=DENIER/YARN WIDTH/4.5
DENIER=GSM*YARN WIDTH*4.5
Remark: It only works for PP woven bags weaving industry, and the GSM will arise if weaved as anti-slip type bags.
There are a few benefits of using a GSM calculator:
1. You can easily compare different types of pp woven fabric
2. You can ensure that the fabric you’re using is of high quality.
3. You can make sure that your printing project will turn out well by choosing a fabric with an appropriate GSM for your needs.
